"There's nothing better than seeing the relief on a homeowner's face."
Safe, stable housing plays a vital role in health and well-being. For many low-income homeowners in Marion and Polk counties, critical home repairs can mean the difference between remaining safely in their homes or facing costly challenges that threaten their housing stability.
With support from a WHC Community Impact Grant, Habitat for Humanity of the Mid-Willamette Valley continues to partner with low-to-moderate income families and individuals to provide affordable exterior home repairs throughout the region.
Habitat’s Repair Program focuses on improving the affordability, quality, safety, and availability of housing by addressing critical repair needs, including roof, siding, window, and door replacements. These improvements help preserve existing affordable housing, reduce energy costs, and prevent displacement for homeowners who may not otherwise be able to afford necessary repairs. This work is especially important for older adults and others who want to remain in their homes as they age, helping them maintain independence while staying connected to their communities.
Since launching the program in 2022, Habitat has partnered with eight low-income homeowners to complete affordable home repairs. This year’s Community Impact Grant funding is already making a difference, supporting projects such as a roof replacement for one homeowner and the installation of a mobility ramp for a disabled veteran.
“There’s nothing better than seeing the relief on a homeowner’s face when they know they can continue living safely in their own home,” said Jerry Ambris, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of the Mid-Willamette Valley. “These repairs help older adults maintain their independence and stay in the place where they feel most comfortable and connected.”
